He was two years old when James Cook departed Plymouth for the South Sea in 1768, and thirty years later, as a Surrey curate, he read the account of that journey, including descriptions of the thin population of people on the eastern coast of the continent now called Australia, then New Holland. Malthus summarized for his readers claims about “the very small number of inhabitants . . . and the apparent inability of the country, from its desolate state, to support many more.” Indeed, Malthus found his own core question already explicitly posed in this account of New Holland: why were numbers so low, and how had they been kept so? He transferred the passage verbati into his new, long Essay: او متن را کلمه به کلمه به متن جدید خود منتقل کرد، انشا طولانی: “““By what means the inhabitants of this country are reduced to such a number as it can subsist, is not perhaps very easy to guess; whether, like the inhabitants of New Zealand, they are destroyed by the hands of each other in contests for food; whether they are swept off by accidental famine; or whether there is any cause that prevents the increase of the species, must beleft for future adventure«به چه معنی ساکنان این کشور به این تعداد کاهش یافته است از آنجایی که می تواند ادامه یابد، شاید حدس زدن آن چندان آسان نباشد.
