تاریخ جادویی اربابان حلقه که تلویحاً به رمان «ارباب حلقه‌های» جِی آر. آر تالکین اشاره دارد، بیشتر در حد افسانه و نبردهای نیمه‌به‌یادمانده‌ی میان خیر و شر تنزل یافته. میراث آن در پس رازهای ماوراءطبیعه مخفی شده و در داستان‌‌های پریان، اِلف‌ها، جادوگران و خوناشام‌ها به حیات خود ادامه داده.
محبوب‌ترین داستان‌های جام به حکایت‌های «حلقه‌ی طلایی» گوئینویر و «حلقه‌ی روکش آهنین باشکوه» کملوت–شوالیه‌های میزگرد مربوط است. با شکستن حلقه، این سرزمین دچار آشوب شده و نیروهای تاریکی بر زمین، استارلایت و جنگل مسلط می‌شوند. چرا احساس می‌کنیم که حقایق ژرف‌تری در پس اسرار حلقه و جام وجود دارد؟ چرا پیشرفت‌های عادی آنها تحریف و پنهان شده‌؟
